My following 3 posts give u a full idea on the meaning of this song. Remember Salif Keita uses this song (as in many others of his songs) mainly to criticize African dictators for clinging vainly to power. “Mansa lu” means kings or rulers and “Donso lu” means hunters. I hope this will help.
This is my favorite song of all time from Salif. It is complex.. u have to know the history and culture of madingue(Mali Guinea etc..) but I will give u an idea: he is praising the “Donsolu”, the hunters,who in mandingue were very powerful and brave fraternity.. they have magical powers as well. Salif’s father,SINA, was a Donso as well as their famous ancestor, Sunjata Keita, the emperor. So the song is a series of shorts metaphors celebrating the bravery of the Donsolu.
Meaning: metaphor: O little river bird u will not be able to dodge the Donsolu, since the vulture cannot feed on grass. O Mensa lu ( kings), which king do u think I’m calling upon here? It is Fama Allah (God), creator of all kings and he has no equal..he created the tyrants and the compassionate and none of them will last forever (indirect criticism of African dictators). I am calling upon Sea Mami, Karankeni, and Donso SINA.. home might be good for a person but not wood (hunting)…

Manhood cannot go without magic and magic alone cannot go without manhood… strength will not mean manhood and smallness will not prevent manhood… Donsolu are always brave. O I am calling upon the kings of the east ,west, north and south ..kings of Africa and those of world not the tyrants but the compassionate. ..
